I did wonder about a Peregrine Falcon but with my limited knowledge and the position of the sun I could see no markings at all and for some reason I thought Peregrines were a little bit bigger. But I am happy for it to be this bird as I have never seen one hunting before!Chris Stevensonnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3003192502289547336.post-23753912263394493632009-09-15T19:52:15.043+01:002009-09-15T19:52:15.043+01:00Good to have your comment on Birds2blog Warren, pl...Good to have your comment on Birds2blog Warren, please keep looking in now and again.

I'll drop you an e-mail in due course.Pete Woodruffhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16039548314043002357noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3003192502289547336.post-12642135415361340822009-09-15T19:49:34.385+01:002009-09-15T19:49:34.385+01:00Good to hear from you again Chris and thanks for y...Good to hear from you again Chris and thanks for your comments.

The Merlin takes 'mainly' small birds and my suggestion would be that you saw a Peregrine Falcon, but perhaps you are about to tell me you know the difference between the two in which case my apologies. Whatever, the Wood Pigeon was extremely lucky to get away with its life with either of these masters of the hunt.

Keep in touch now and again Chris as its always nice to hear from you.Pete Woodruffhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16039548314043002357noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3003192502289547336.post-80296037790474657472009-09-15T19:09:46.530+01:002009-09-15T19:09:46.530+01:00An excellent days birding, those goldfinch's m...An excellent days birding, those goldfinch's must have looked stunning. 300!Warren Bakerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16042798315431561018noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3003192502289547336.post-45556127388783293082009-09-15T15:05:06.301+01:002009-09-15T15:05:06.301+01:00I saw a raptor close to Plover Scar on the relentl...I saw a raptor close to Plover Scar on the relentless pursuit of a Wood Pigeon on Sunday. I'm not sure if it was successful as they both disappeared from view but it was an impressive sight. These Pigeons never cease to amaze me with their stamina and agility in the face of what would appear to be certain death!

I assume it was a Merlin, about the correct size but I didn;t have my bins with me!
