Sooner or Later....

Greenshank. Phil Slade.

....someone someday is going to get their name in lights after finding 'sumatgud' at Conder Green where I started with JB/BT this morning to find a Little Ringed Plover which will be accompanied by young in a 'couple of weeks' if all goes well. Also noted 3 Greenshank one of which is pictured above - by kind permission of PS - a Spotted Redshank, 11 Common Sandpiper, and 2 Little Egret graced the pool this morning before flying off towards the Lune Estuary.

Redstart. John Bateman.

We then made the short journey to find ourselves on the edge of the Forest of Bowland at Christ Church where the finds were excellent with a pair and three juvenile Redstart - thanks for the photograph John - 2 Spotted Flycatcher, six active House Martin nests, 2 Wren, a Coal Tit, Greenfinch, Dunnock, and Pied Wagtail with young. From the road past Doeholme Farm a juvenile Redstart (JB saw adults) and a Spotted Flycatcher. At Cam Brow c.12 Sand Martins are still around the area and nest holes at this small but successful colony, and a Great-spotted Woodpecker flew over.

In the Tower Lodge area a Spotted Flycatcher pair feeding two young but I was disappointed these were the only ones seen in the area today. I personally saw Redpoll in flight but never more than one bird at a time and I find it difficult to imagine anyone ever being able to assess the population here - which is probably quite good - as they are often seen on most visits at various locations in the area and always appear very mobile in my observations. A male Redstart was at the back side of the plantation an area which has been a little less productive this year, 2 Nuthatch, 4 Grey Wagtail, 2 Coal Tit, a single Willow Warbler, a Green Woodpecker was never more than heard, and a Buzzard over.

And finally....

Sedge Warbler. David Cookson.

Another one of those excellent images you come to expect from David Cookson, thanks for this David, and to Phil for the Greenshank at Conder Green where he's hoping to beat me to the next 'goodie' here....good luck Phil you can do it....if you don't someone else will!

David and Phil's websites are HERE and HERE respectively, please take a look to see some excellent accounts and equally excellent photography.

  1. Does anyone ever SEE that green woodpecker at tower? Beginning to think its a starling or a tape recording!
    Cheers

  2. Actually had excellent - if distant - views of two (presumably a pair) earlier in the summer behind Tower Lodge at the back side of the plantation. But I'd agree they are hard to actually see, but GW are notoriously difficult in that regard.

Thanks for looking in Dave it is much appreciated.
