BIRDING THE LUNE ESTUARY THE FOREST OF BOWLAND AND BEYOND......................................................MEDITTERANEAN GULLS CONDER POOL PETE WOODRUFF

Thursday 2 May 2013

High Noon.

Greenshank Ana Minguez

Even if it was only going to be a bit of a whiz round for a couple of hours, it was mid-day yesterday before I escaped to get some birding in and made haste to Conder Green to find 3 Spotted Redshank, 2 Greenshank, and 2 Common Sandpiper in the creeks, with a single Black-tailed Godwit, and 2 Wigeon apparently intent on summering here on Conder Pool. The circuit was a worthwhile exercise if only to find my first Whitethroat of the summer.

Eider. Pete Woodruff.

The Lune Estuary at Glasson Dock produced 15 Eider, another first for me as I don't ever recall seeing such a number of Eider on the River Lune here before. The only other birds of note were just 3 Black-tailed Godwit.

I found another Whitethroat at Cockersands, and also found 5 Wheatear and 16 Stock Dove - another excellent count - taking advantage of a recently turned field. Waders were pretty thin but a count of 24 Whimbrel was excellent.

Someone once said to me....

'There's more to life than birds/birding'....was obviously a nut case, and in fact ended up in a mental institution!!
